Values, priorities and obligations

There are things in our lives that we need for our survival, for our mental well-being and for our prosperity. During our lives, we will be drawing on these things. Reciprocally, for each thing, this draw-down will give rise to moral obligations that we must meet. Meeting our obligations is facilitated through the value and reverence we place on each thing.

It is worthwhile to recognize and prioritise these things (as numbered items, highest priority first):

  1. Our faith or beliefs.
  2. Our family.
  3. Our friends.
  4. Our community.
  5. Our country.

Furthermore:

  1. Item 1 is both fundamental and existential. Treat it that way, always.
  2. A lessor priority is not indicative of a lessor importance.
  3. If a thing is not on this list, it is not an obligation, it is a preference.
  4. Not understanding or not meeting our obligations leads to an unfulfilled life, with feelings of unworthiness, of not belonging and not being valued.
  5. Our potential to prosper is influenced equally by what we receive as by what we give.
  6. No one promised us that life would be easy or that it would be fair.
  7. Our mental well-being and prosperity is influenced by the choices we make. Choose well.
  8. Life is a journey. Refer to item 1 for direction and items 2-5 for assistance.
